In unit 1 of this course, we are going to look at the groundbreaking research study on adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, conducted by Dr. Vincent Felitti and Dr. Robert Anda and their colleagues. You will have the chance to hear from the renowned Dr. Nadine Burke Harris and dig deeper into the relationship between ACEs and toxic stress. You will take time to look into executive function and self-regulation and how ACEs and toxic stress can impede the development of these essential skills. You will examine research provided by the Centers for Disease and Prevention Control (CDC) on ACEs prevention and examine six different strategies that can be put into action by communities to support the development of healthy, supportive relationships between children and their caregivers. Lastly, you will study the science of resilience and how it is the most influential factor in mitigating the negative effects of toxic stress.
